The mission of the American Society for Investigative Pathology (ASIP) is to promote the discovery, advancement, and dissemination of basic and translational knowledge in experimental pathology and related disciplines by fostering investigation into the pathogenesis, classification, diagnosis, and manifestations of disease through meetings, publications, and educational activities. The Society is headquartered in the Washington, DC metropolitan area near the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD.
Affiliates
TheSocietà Italiana di Patologia e Medicina Traslazionale (SIPMeT), the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP), the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP), the Association of Pathology Chairs, the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information (ICPI), and the Society of Toxicologic Pathology are affiliate societies. ASIP is a cooperating society of the American Board of Pathology and a charter constituent society of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and of the Intersociety Council for Pathology Information (ICPI).
Meeting and Educational Courses
Each year, ASIP meets together with other basic biomedical research societies at the Experimental Biology Meeting. This scientific meeting provides a forum for members to present their research findings in oral and poster sessions; symposia provide perspectives on advances in topic areas. Regular and emeritus members may sponsor abstracts. The annual business meeting and award presentations also take place during this meeting. The ASIP 2017 Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology will be held in Chicago, Illinois (April 22 – 26).
Starting in 2015, ASIP launched an annual series of conferences called PISA (Pathobiology for Investigators, Students, and Academicians). PISA 2016 will be held in Houston, Texas (October 20-22, 2016) with the theme of Breakthroughs in Biology: From Understanding Pathogenesis to Translational Medicine.
Publications
The American Journal of Pathology (AJP) is the official journal of the Society, providing a scholarly forum for the dissemination of information about experimental and investigative pathology. This internationally recognized research journal is published monthly by Elsevier. ASIP and AMP jointly own The Journal of Molecular Diagnostics (JMD), which is published bimonthly by Elsevier and is devoted to original papers on translational research and validation of molecular discoveries in medicine into the clinical diagnostic setting. The ASIP Journal CME Program offers continuing medical education credits to the readership of JMD. ASIP supports an active website at http://www.asip.org that lists upcoming scientific meetings and announces news of interest to Society members. ASIP also hosts a jobs board at www.PathologyJobsToday.org.
Awards and Honors
ASIP recognizes individuals at different stages in their careers. The Gold-Headed Cane is presented to a leader in academic pathology for long-standing contributions to investigative pathology, including meritorious research and outstanding teaching. The ASIP-Rous-Whipple Award recognizes a distinguished investigator with a long-standing and ongoing research program. The ASIP Outstanding Investigator Award for meritorious research in experimental pathology, the Cotran Early Career Investigator Award, and the Young Scientist Leadership Award are presented to members who are at earlier career stages. The Robbins Distinguished Educator Award recognizes a pathologist whose contributions to education have had a manifest impact on learning. The Society also honors junior faculty, pre- and post-doctoral trainees and undergraduate students who are presenting papers at the annual meeting and the PISA conferences with travel awards.
Public Affairs
Through its membership in FASEB and liaisons with other pathology organizations, ASIP is committed to promoting quality research and educational environments, including appropriate resources for research support, peer-and review procedures, and graduate curriculum in pathology.
