The Department of Pathology offers a training program in anatomic and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathology includes training in autopsy and surgical pathology, forensics, neuropathology, immunopathology, cytology, and Pediatric Pathology (Children’s Hospital and Medical Center). Clinical pathology includes training in hematology, coagulation, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics, transfusion medicine, flow cytometry, clinical chemistry, toxicology, and microbiology. Initial rotations emphasize technical skills, methodology, basic disease mechanisms, and relationships to clinical problems whereas later rotations emphasize development of consultative and management skills. All house staff participate in teaching medical students, pharmacy students, and other junior house staff. Research opportunities are available.
The program is ACGME accredited. Currently, there are 8 residents in our program. The residency is 18 months of core anatomic pathology and 18 months of core clinical pathology. Typically, 7 months are set aside for electives during the third and fourth years of residency. FACILITIES – All training programs are under the direction of Creighton University. The primary teaching hospital of Creighton University and base of the pathology residency program is the 300-bed CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center – Bergan Mercy (CUMC). CHI Health is the largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare provider in Nebraska and southwest Iowa with 11 acute care hospitals, a specialty spine hospital, freestanding inpatient psychiatric and skilled nursing facilities, and more than 100 CHI Clinic locations. The main clinical laboratory for CHI Health is located at CUMC and is a full-service laboratory performing chemistry, hematology, microbiology, molecular pathology, and anatomic pathology. In addition, each hospital has a Rapid Response Laboratory (RRL) that handles STAT testing at the specific location. As the primary teaching partner of Creighton University’s health sciences schools, CHI Health is committed to teaching the health professionals of the future with approximately 70 autopsies, 32,000 surgical pathology specimen, 15,000 GYN cytology specimens, 2,600 Non-GYN cytology specimens and about one million billable tests or profiles performed. Other CHI hospitals and CHI clinics add another 1.5 million billable tests. Resident rotations at the American Red Cross Blood Bank Center, Douglas County Coroner’s Office, Children’s Hospital, and University of Nebraska Medical Center are integrated into the pathology training program.
