The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency is a four-year, fully accredited program in anatomic and clinical pathology. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (CSMC) and Veterans Affair Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) are a joint AP/CP Residency Program. AP & CP rotations will take place at both VAGLAHS and CSMC locations. The program’s strength is based on a combination of superb patient care material, faculty sub specialization with strength in anatomic and clinical pathology, sophisticated research programs, and the most advanced instrumentation. The Department runs a centralized service providing total laboratory support to the hospital and has a robust outreach program in anatomic and clinical pathology. Residents participate in all areas of pathology including autopsy and surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry, EM, cytopathology, forensic pathology, clinical chemistry, toxicology, molecular pathology, cytogenetics/HLA, hematology, transfusion medicine, clinical immunology, and all aspects of microbiology and computerized laboratory management.

The program is approved for a total of 20 combined AP/CP residency trainees and in addition offers fellowships in GI and liver pathology, renal pathology, hematopathology, transfusion medicine and molecular genetic pathology.

Cedars-Sinai is a nonprofit quaternary academic medical center with 886 beds. There are approximately 56,000 surgical specimens, 22,000 cytologic specimens and 70 autopsies annually. The clinical laboratories perform nearly 9 million tests yearly utilizing state-of-the-art technology. Besides having depth in general medical and surgical cases, we provide breadth by being a trauma center, a tertiary care center for all specialties with an NCI accredited cancer institute and an active organ transplant program, with the Heart Transplant Program having performed the most number of heart transplants in the nation for two years in a row. Well-funded basic, translational, and clinical research programs are integral to the Medical Center through numerous associated Institutes and the Pathology Department in the divisions of Experimental Pathology and Translational Pathology. As clinical examples, the Neurosurgical and Prostate Cancer Institutes are among the premier brain and prostate tumor programs in the country, providing abundant material for education and research. We have molecular pathology laboratories in anatomic and clinical pathology. The hospital’s libraries contain more than 12,000 books and monographs and subscribe to over 600 journals. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine maintains its own library of pathology journals and textbooks.

The Residency Program includes training at the VAGLAHS, which has more than 8,000 surgical specimens, 40 autopsies and 4 million clinical laboratory tests annually. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System includes 10 faculty members, representing Anatomic, Clinical Pathology. The VAGLAHS is a 500-bed general healthcare system.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is located at the junction of the Beverly Hills and West Hollywood sections of Los Angeles. The area is renowned for its wide variety of social, dining and recreational facilities and the excellent climate in which to enjoy them. Los Angeles also is a major cultural center with superb museums, theaters, and musical events. Three medical schools are in the immediate area.

Application Instructions

Applications are accepted through ERAS. Candidates for the residency program who do not possess a California license must be within two years of graduation from an approved medical school in the USA or Canada. Graduates of foreign medical schools or more than two years post US graduation must be eligible for a California license. Foreign medical school graduates must have a PTAL and an a ECFMG certificate submitted with their ERAS application. Stipend

The annual salary levels for residents for 2017-18 are: PGY1 $56,922.53; PGY2 $58,747.10; PGY3 $61,059.65 PGY4 $63,181.25; PGY5 $65,366.50; PGY6 $68,039.71; PGY7 $70,076.45. All residents are provided with professional liability insurance, medical and dental benefits for the resident, spouse and children, and uniforms with laundry services.
