We offer training leading to certification in anatomic and/or clinical pathology. Combined AP/CP training includes a core curriculum of 24 months during which residents learn key aspects of diagnostic pathology and basic principles of clinical practice. This experience is comprehensive and covers all areas of anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine, with an integrated array of workshops and conferences designed to reinforce interrelationships between the two disciplines. This is followed by a period of advanced training during which residents interact and collaborate with physicians and other practitioners from relevant clinical services. In the remainder of the combined training program, residents are encouraged to focus on a particular area of diagnostic pathology. AP-only and CP only programs provide similar tiered approaches, with introductory core experiences in each discipline followed by a period of specialization. In all areas of training, we give special attention to the role of the pathologist as a clinician and provide graduated responsibility during the advanced portions of the resident’s training.
We also strongly urge residents to undertake research projects, either growing out of their experience in clinical practice or in collaboration with investigators in the experimental pathology section of the department at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Current on-going research areas include neuro-degenerative and demyelinating disease; HIV and other infectious diseases; molecular parasitology; cytokine-mediated inflammation; and endothelial cell function.
All residents learn the elements of informatics, epidemiology, resource management, ethical leadership, and the role of the laboratory director in healthcare delivery. Montefiore Medical Center is a pioneer accountable care organization, and residents in our program learn how to practice pathology as a member of a patient-focused integrated team.
We offer 20 resident positions as well as fellowships in Surgical Pathology, Hematopathology, Gynecologic Pathology, GI/Liver Pathology, Dermatopathology, Cytopathology, and Molecular Genetic Pathology. A combined residency-postdoctoral fellowship is available to qualified applicants.
Montefiore Medical Center is a large modern healthcare delivery system in New York City and Westchester County which offers training in over 80 areas of medicine for over 1,500 trainees. The 726-bed Moses Division is located in the north Bronx near Van Cortlandt Park and includes the 106-bed Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and the Greene Medical Arts Pavilion, an outpatient care and diagnostic testing facility. The 396-bed Jack D. Weiler Hospital is located adjacent to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Morris Park section of the Bronx. Nearby is Montefiore Medical Park, an ambulatory care facility that contains offices for outpatient visits, full-time clinical practices and administrative offices for clinical departments, as well as Montefiore Westchester Square, a full-service emergency department. The Montefiore system also recently acquired several other hospitals in the north Bronx and Westchester County, and there are more than 350 physicians practicing medicine in over 20 community-based locations throughout the Bronx and Westchester that comprise the Montefiore Medical Group. The Department’s research laboratories are located on the grounds of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The clinical laboratories process over 12 million tests annually. We also perform approximately 200 autopsies, sign-out over 40,000 surgical specimens and review over 50,000 cytology specimens annually. The libraries of both the Medical Center and College of Medicine are large, and both are accessible on-line.
In addition to the program leadership listed below, there are over 60 faculty experts in all areas of anatomic, clinical, and experimental pathology involved in both the residency and fellowship programs.
We are in a dynamic environment in the northeast Bronx. Modern playgrounds, softball and tennis courts are either on campus or close by. The New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, Yankee Stadium, and other famous Bronx landmarks are short drives away. Residents can also reach Manhattan in 30 minutes by car (traffic permitting), subway, bus, or the MetroNorth commuter rail system, and residents receive discount tickets to Broadway shows, the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, and other cultural events.
