Program Information

This one-year accredited program is designed to train up to two well-rounded, academically-oriented cytopathologists with advanced training in diagnostic cytopathology and in the interpretation and performance of fine needle aspirations (FNAs).

The program is designed to provide the successful candidate with an in-depth experience that will include interpretation of liquid based thin layer cytology techniques, FNA interpretation, rapid on-site evaluations (ROSE), and optimal specimen triage including immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and flow cytometry.

Approximately 16,000 patient cases are evaluated each year in our hospital-based laboratory. From that number, about 8,000 are gynecologic cases, 6,000 cases are nongynecologic specimens, and 2,000 are FNA cases.

After an initial training period, the fellow is expected to assume a more independent role, particularly in the latter half of the academic year, while still under supervision. Participation in conferences and teaching of pathology residents and rotating medical students is required. Fellows are encouraged to design and complete a research project.
