SUNY Downstate’s Pathology residency program is resident-focused, meaning that residency education is a true priority for our faculty. Our faculty get to know each resident well and nurture their development.

We have faculty in most subspecialty areas of pathology including Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine, Chemical Pathology, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Forensic Pathology, Hematopathology, Medical Microbiology, Molecular Genetic Pathology, Neuropathology, and Perinatal Pathology.

Trainees are exposed to an exciting mix of case material in our affiliated hospitals: University Hospital of Brooklyn, Kings County Hospital Center, Maimonides Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Columbia University Medical Center, and the Veterans Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System – Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses.

Application Instructions

All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The Program does not accept hard copy applications via regular mail, fax nor electronic copies via email.

Residency candidates must be graduates of medical schools in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or be graduated from a foreign medical school acceptable to the American Board of Pathology and hold an ECFMG certificate.

Three (3) Letters of Reference and an interview are required. Letters should include information regarding the candidate’s pathology experience if possible.

Eligibility

The program is accredited by the ACGME for 24 positions, with 4 to 6 first-year residents entering each year.

Stipend

PGY-1 residents will receive a stipend.  Residents are provided with professional liability, medical care and hospitalization insurance, dental insurance, meals, books, funding to present original scholarship at regional and national meetings and four weeks each of vacation annually.
