American Association for Neuropathologists (AANP)
Neuropathology is a profession built around the principles that guide patient care, education, and research in order to promote human health. The Neuropathology subspecialty primarily concerns itself with diseases of the nervous system, including changes at tissue, cellular, subcellular and molecular levels, with a consideration of the etiology and pathophysiology, genetics, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of such diseases. It is intricately connected to the practice of Anatomic Pathology, and is directly affected by developments in molecular pathology and the neurosciences. The American Association of Neuropathologists (AANP) began in the early 1930’s as a professional and educational organization representing American neuropathologists. It was incorporated in the State of Pennsylvania in May 1960. The AANP’s purpose is to advance the science, practice, and teaching of neuropathology and it is the principal advocate of the profession in the United States. Currently, AANP has more than 800 members.
Since 1981 the official forum of the AANP has been the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology, one of the premier neuroscience journals in the world.
An annual meeting is held each year. The meeting includes a one-day Special Course on one or more neuropathology topics, two days of scientific sessions (platform and poster presentations) in which AANP members or their guests present original research (both basic and clinical), an evening Diagnostic Slide Session, and a half-day Presidential Symposium. This activity will offer a maximum of 25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Become a Member
We encourage scientists and trainees from all related disciplines to become members. AANP membership is divided into Affiliate and Active categories. Membership privileges include a yearly subscription to the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology (JNEN) and reduced registration fees at the annual meeting. The JNEN subscription is for the online journal. A $50.00 additional fee is charged for the print version.
